The idea of a walking stick as a cane or other support to go is very new. Not surprisingly, a relic of a more violent culture was appointed co-opted, and now we have well maintained and decorated canes for young and old, men and women, hikers and casual walkers. But in the not so distant past, had walking sticks in an entirely different purpose. In fact, walking sticks used as weapons. And it's not a surprising revelation. How could it be? Irish walking sticks are high, they are heavy, and they used to be full of lead! Other rods were made of very rough, very rough, very solid wood. This will increase the amount of damage to the attacker in case of reckless self-defense.
But you would not see people walking the streets of a city or suburb with a large walking stick, ready to beat heck out of something. Why not? Because usually, it is illegal for people to win the pulp. It is also not the most practical example of self-defense weapon, mace works much better in many situations, and it is easier to carry around. So, when using a walking stick for self defense? Under the best conditions for a strong long way in the desert!
Walking sticks are great to use when hiking, and if you are hiking in a remote, wild area, you risk an attack against wild animals. Generally, wild animals are more afraid of humans not, but sometimes you make a bid for an attack. At other times, just to cross a wild cat, a bear, a wolf, a badger, or anything else that you probably do not want to meet. In these cases, it is nobody's fault but you still have to be careful to defend yourself. You can do this by using a stick to make you look bigger and scarier animals generally avoid attacking unknown creatures larger than themselves. If this is not enough, you must use the long stick to keep animals away.
A walking stick is an excellent tool for self-defense, but these days it is best suited for self-defense of animals.
