Teaching your Kids Self-Defense

Parents should make sure that their kids are safe all the time. As much as possible, parents should always be with their children so that they can oversee them and monitor what is going on with them. However, there are times that you cannot personally look out for your kids especially if you have to go to work or if you have important things to do. Lucky for you if you have a trustworthy nanny who can always be there for your kids during the times that you cannot. Since you are not always beside your children, it is very necessary that they know basic self-defense and protection techniques to help them avoid danger. You have to teach them about safety and self-protection even at a very young age. Here are the things you have to teach your kids so they will always be out of harm's way:• “Do not talk to strangers”-- this is the very first lesson to teach your kids. They should understand that it is not safe talking to people they do not know. • Teach them what to do when they are lost or when they got separated from you in a public area such as shopping malls. You should point out to them that in situations like these, they have to go to a security guard or information and customer service to ask for help. • If you know basic self-defense moves, teach them how to do these techniques so they would know what to do when attacked at home, on school or in a play area. How to break free from a wrist hold is one method that your kids should know. • Tell them to call the emergency hotline, 911, whenever necessary. • They should also identify the situations when they need to run away as immediate as possible. • A family meeting will help in teaching and informing your kids the proper things to do whenever they sense trouble. Have a role-playing activity so they will know when to apply the methods you teach them.• Give children scenarios that involve danger and ask them what they would do about it. This will help you evaluate if your kid really grasp the concept of self-defense. Once you assess that your kid already have a full understanding of basic safety and personal defense techniques, enrolling him or her in a formal self-protection class is the next recommended step you should do.
